Minik, a young Eskimo boy, was brought to New York City with five other Eskimos as "cargo" by Robert Peary in 1897, and left as specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. Orphaned after a year, Minik remained in New York for 12 years, until, disillusioned with white society, he returned to his homeland.
